San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls announced today that the American Hockey League (AHL) club has named Craig Elsten radio play-by-play voice. Elsten will be the inaugural AHL voice of the Gulls for all regular and postseason games, which will air on the club's flagship stations, Mighty 1090-AM and ESPN 1700-AM. In addition to his duties as radio play-by-play voice, Elsten will contribute to the Gulls communications department.
Elsten joins the Gulls with a wealth of radio play-by-play experience across multiple sports. Most recently, Elsten spent six seasons as the voice of the San Diego Sockers, handling both play-by-play and media relations. While with the Sockers, Elsten was recognized as one of the top play-by-play announcers in the Major Arena Soccer League, and was named the lead announcer of the United States National Arena Soccer Team for the WMF World Cup, played in March, 2015.
Additionally, Elsten has covered high school football, basketball and baseball along with UC San Diego men's and women's basketball in recent years. One of the primary pre- and post-game hosts on the Mighty 1090's Padres coverage, Elsten also spends regular time as a talk show host and sports anchor at 1090.
"Craig has well-established credibility in this market," said Gulls President of Business Operations Ari Segal. "He is a storyteller. We feel that Craig has the ability to create an exciting call that will appeal to new and existing Gulls and Ducks fans as well as hardcore San Diego sports fans willing to give us a try."
In addition to his radio play-by-play coverage, Elsten will be a frequent contributor on all of the Gulls' platforms. Elsten will host weekly podcasts and video features, which will be available on the team's website (www.sandiegogulls.com), and will contribute written features to the team's website and game-day program. Elsten will also represent the club at many of the Gulls' community events and maintain his presence in the local San Diego sports scene year-round, including his current role with the Padres.
"We are excited for Craig to join us in this new era of San Diego Gulls hockey," said Gulls General Manager Bob Ferguson. "We have complete trust in Craig as a broadcaster, and are excited to watch his talents flourish as he calls our games. He'll be an asset both in the booth and in the community."
Craig currently resides in La Mesa with his wife Mitzi, son James (4) and pug Pogi.
Radio coverage of the Gulls' 2015-16 campaign begins October, 2015, with the club's home opener on October 10 at the Valley View Casino Center. Tune into 1090-AM or 1700-AM for all 68 Gulls games this season.
