San Antonio Tosses Second Straight Shutout to Clinch Series vs. Midland

San Antonio Missions News Release

Right-hander Jesse Scholtens, in his first start since rejoining the club from Triple-A El Paso, was tasked with keeping the incredible pitching stretch for the Missions going. The Fairfield, CA native looked just like the hurler Missions fans had been accustomed to watching dominate the league in April.

Scholtens, dubbed as "DeNunez" as part of the club's "Sandlot" themed night, worked around two hits in the first. After escaping the early trouble, Scholtens would then enter cruise control mode, retiring each of the final 16 batters he faced. In his six shutout innings, Scholtens (5-1) did not walk a batter and fanned five.

Mound opponent, Jesus Luzardo, was also impressive Saturday night, keeping the Missions off the board through five.

However, San Antonio took advantage of Luzardo's departure in the sixth, to plate the only run they would need. Kyle Friedrichs (5-4) took over for Luzardo and promptly allowed a Fernando "YaYa" Tatis Jr. double to left center. After Ty "Tommy" France lined out to right, Austin "Timmy" Allen drove in "YaYa" with a two-bagger of his own.

The Missions would tack on an insurance run in the eighth with Kyle "Ham" Overstreet's sacrifice fly to center off reliever Miguel Romero.

Rowan Wick had to throw 27 pitches in the ninth, but the RockHounds could only muster a two-out Eli White walk. For Wick, who struck out two, it was his fourth save of the season.

San Antonio (3-2, 45-30) wraps up its four-game series with Midland (0-5, 33-41) on Circle K's Sunday Funday. Sunday will also be a Bark in the Park game courtesy of Raising Cane's. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM. Cal Quantrill (6-3, 4.14) will get the ball for the Missions in the homestand finale. Midland has not announced a starter yet.
