San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars have picked up the 2009 options on the contracts for Sophia Young and Shanna Crossley, Head Coach and General Manager Dan Hughes announced today.
Both players are entering the third season of their rookie contracts. Young was the Silver Stars fourth overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft, while Crossley was the 16th selection. Young, already a two-time WNBA all-star, has started all but one game during the last two seasons. She led the team in scoring and rebounding as a rookie and finished 2007 second on the squad with 16.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. She also led the team in steals with 49 and earned second-team All-WNBA honors.
"We have been treated to watch Sophia immediately impact our organization as a rookie and then continue her development into an all-star," said Hughes. "We cannot wait to continue to watch this special player lead us in the coming years."
Crossley averaged 9.2 points per game in 2007, up from 6.6 her rookie season. She has played in every game during her two seasons with the squad and already has etched her name in the Silver Stars record books. On San Antonio's all-time leaders list, she ranks second in three-point field goals made (122), first in three-point field goals attempted (308) and third in three-point field goal percentage (.396)
"Shanna has become such an important piece of the Silver Stars from the time we drafted her and through her second year," said Hughes. "Her attention to improvement is truly special and we are so glad to have her as a vital piece of the Silver Stars future."
The Silver Stars open the 2008 season on the road at Sacramento May 17 before hosting the defending WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury on May 20. Affordable full and partial season ticket plans are on sale now. Visit www.sasilverstars.com or call (210) 444.5090 for more information.
