May 24, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO (May 24, 2019) - San Antonio FC (3-5-3) will travel to face Rio Grande Valley FC (3-4-4) at H-E-B Park on Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the first South Texas Derby of 2019.
SAFC heads into the match after recording a 1-1 draw against Tulsa Roughnecks FC last Saturday on the back end of the team's 2-0 win in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Alamo City club continues to look for its first road win of the season, and has not fallen on the road against the Toros since the 2016 season.
The match marks the second Copa Tejas match for SAFC after the club previously fell to Austin Bold on the road on March 30. The Bold currently lead the race with one win and a draw, while SAFC has yet to face RGV FC or El Paso Locomotive FC.
RGV FC will look to earn three points at home after recording a draw and a loss in their previous two matches. The club is 2-1-2 when playing at home and have scored 19 goals while conceding 20 so far in 2019.
SAFC is 3-4-3 all-time against RGV FC. The Alamo City club earned a 3-1 win the last time the two faced off in Edinburg, TX with goals from Connor Presley, Lance Laing and Ever Guzman. SAFC also scored the first-ever USL Championship goal at H-E-B Park in the team's 1-0 win over the Toros on March 26, 2017.
San Antonio FC midfielder Brian Gomez will look to continue his good run of form after recording three goals and three assists in eight matches for the club, while defender Kai Greene will face familiar faces after joining SAFC from RGV FC prior to the start of the 2019 season. Greene made 68 appearances for the Toros from 2016-18 and is one of just three SAFC players to feature in every minute of the USL Championship season so far.
