San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC will host Major League Soccer side FC Dallas at Toyota Field on Wednesday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match marks the first time that SAFC has hosted an MLS opponent at Toyota Field.
SAFC heads into the match just three days after earning a thrilling comeback victory over the Portland Timbers 2 at Toyota Field. Late goals from midfielder Omar Gordon and forward Alex Bruce secured three points for the Alamo City club in the first of four home matches in the month of June.
Following the win, San Antonio FC Head Coach Darren Powell quickly turned his and his team's attention to the MLS visitors that come to town this week.
"For us, it's another game and we look forward to every game," said Powell. "It's obviously a meaningful competition with great history and we're glad to still be participating. For the fans and the community of San Antonio, with it being an MLS team and specifically FC Dallas from the same state, playing in a meaningful game is massive. It's massive for the club, and for everybody involved. It's very exciting. This is an experience we can share with the fans and we're going to come out and give our best efforts as always."
San Antonio FC advanced to the fourth round of the Open Cup after defeating the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the third round on penalty kicks at Toyota Field on May 23. After a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes, SAFC scored all their penalty kicks to earn a 5-3 PK victory and a place in the fourth round. San Antonio originally defeated the Midland Sockers FC 4-0 to advance past the second round of this year's tournament.
The game against FC Dallas is just the second time San Antonio has faced an MLS team in the Open Cup. SAFC previously fell to the Houston Dynamo in the fourth round of the 2016 tournament. San Antonio has never faced FC Dallas in an official competition, but the two clubs have faced each other once in each of the last two preseasons. In 2016, SAFC fell 1-2 to FC Dallas prior to the start of the regular season, while SAFC earned a 2-0 win prior to the 2018 campaign. FC Dallas won the U.S. Open Cup in 2016 after defeating the New England Revolution 4-2 in the final. San Antonio FC defender Greg Cochrane explained the team's mindset against a worthy opponent.
"It's just a game of soccer," said Cochrane. "Sometimes people get caught up in the fact that it's an MLS team or a USL team, but anything can happen in a 90-minute game. You can play a team 10 times and lose nine, but that one time you might win, so who says that one time can't be tomorrow night for us. That's how we approach it and anything can happen, so we're just going to give it our best shot, but we're confident going into this game."
Should SAFC earn a win on Wednesday, the club's round of 16 opponent will be drawn on Thursday, June 7 at 10 a.m. by U.S. Soccer. Following Wednesday's match, SAFC will return to USL action on Saturday, June 16 at Toyota Field when they face Sacramento Republic FC for the second and final time of the 2018 regular season.
