San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio FC defender Darnell King was named to the USL All-League Second Team, the league announced today. The honor marks King's second all-league season after previously being named to the NASL Best XI following the 2014 season.
"We are pleased for Darnell to be recognized by the league and rewarded for his good work this year," said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. "He had a good season for us as an attacking right-back. Darnell has good character and worked hard all season long, both on the training field and in games."
King finished the 2018 USL regular season as the San Antonio FC leader in starts (32), minutes (2,870), clearances (127), tackles (89), interceptions (69), duels won (207) and aerial duels won (65). The right-back also finished tied for the most USL games overall on the club while also recording the second-most assists (5). King added two goals in USL play and three in all competitions for the Alamo City club in 2018.
Of the six USL defenders to earn all-league honors in 2018, King ranks first in tackles and minutes while tying for first in games played. The right-back collected the second most assists of those six players and was tied for the second most interceptions. The 28-year-old started and played 90 minutes in all but two of his 32 league appearances over the course of the season. Overall in all competitions in 2018, King appeared in 34 games while tallying 2,996 total minutes played.
"It's an honor to be recognized on the All-League Second Team," said King. "I could not have done it without my brothers that I went to battle alongside with, the fans for pushing me through every game, and the SAFC coaching staff and organization for giving me every opportunity to achieve this honor this season. I am very grateful."
The honor marks the second time King has been named to an all-league team after he was named to the NASL Best XI following the 2014 season with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. King ended that campaign with 25 appearances, 2,250 minutes, two goals and four assists overall. King originally joined San Antonio FC from the Tampa Bay Rowdies after a successful trial in preseason prior to the 2018 USL season.
