HARLINGEN- Brownsville native Henry Garcia of the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings and Logan Williamson of the San Angelo Colts were engaged in a competitive pitcher's duel Sunday night.

But unfortunately for local rooters Williamson (5-1) was able to outlast Garcia (1-2) and win, 4-1, salvaging one game for the Colts (22-21) in their five game series at Harlingen Field.

Williamson scattered seven hits in seven plus innings and allowed only one earned run while walking and striking out two batters to move into second place among all North American Baseball League pitchers in victories.

"I was throwing my fastball on the inside of the plate. They have hit a lot of singles up the middle on us so I wanted to make them pull it," Williamson said.

While WhiteWings' batters pulled fair balls only nine times in 28 trips to the plate against Williamson, after Francisco Santana singled, stole second, and scored on two groundouts in the first inning, the 27-year-old lefthander did not allow another baserunner to advance as far as third base while he was on the mound.

Meanwhile, Henry Garcia appeared to be even more dominant. After allowing a run on two hits in the top of the first, Garcia settled down, eventually retiring 15 straight hitters from the second to seventh innings.

But with two outs in the seventh, Daryl Jones touched Garcia for the only walk he allowed all day. Jamar Walton and Texas-San Antonio product Ryan Hutson followed with singles centerfield to plate Jones, and Garcia was taken out trailing 2-1. He finished allowing just five hits and fanning five.

San Angelo (22-21) centerfielder Ronnie Gaines hit a 2-run home run to left field in the eighth inning, his fifth of the season, off Julio Santana to cap the scoring.

Erik Draxton pitched the ninth for San Angelo to earn his league-leading 12th save of the season.

The WhiteWings (24-19), tied for second place with Fort Worth and just 1 1/2 back of first place Edinburg, will next host the McAllen Thunder on Tuesday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
