Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored three first inning runs for the third game in a row and coasted to a 6-2 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats Thursday afternoon at Canwest Park, finishing off a four-game series sweep.
The first four Winnipeg runners reached in the first inning and the Fish put three on the board before first-time RailCats starter Jeff Fischer (0-2) had recorded his second out. The Goldeyes scored in the first inning in every game of the four-game set and were never so much as tied by the RailCats, who battled through all four games but did not get enough timely hitting and left 34 men on base.
The Goldeyes added a run in the second and two in the sixth to pull away from the RailCats, who got single runs in the second and fourth innings. Mike Rohde continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-4 day and scored both RailCats runs, coming in on Jeff Beachum's sacrifice fly in the second and a Brett Wallace RBI single in the fourth.
Andrew Cruse (2-1) earned the win for the Goldeyes, throwing the first 5.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Cruse was followed by Winnipeg relievers Derek Feldkamp and Aaron Odom who came up with 3.2 innings of two-hit relief. Dustin Richardson led the Winnipeg attack with two hits including a two-run single in the sixth.
The Goldeyes (19-5) have won seven games in a row and six straight against the RailCats, who dropped their fifth consecutive decision and fall a season-worst six games under .500. The RailCats have lost 11 of their last 15 games overall but will return home Friday night to kick off a seven-game homestand.
The RailCats (10-16) will meet the Schaumburg Flyers (15-8) for the first time this season Friday at 7 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard. Following the game, fans can enjoy a postgame fireworks show presented by First Midwest Bank and the Post-Tribune. The RailCats and Flyers have not announced starting pitchers for the game, which will be broadcast on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
Notes: The RailCats played 13 of their first 26 games in either Fargo, N.D. or Winnipeg, covering nearly 5,000 travel miles through the first month of the season. The RailCats went just 3-10 in those 13 games ... the âCats have lost five in a row for the second time in the last three weeks when they dropped six straight. Before that stretch, the RailCats had not had a losing streak longer than four games since 2006 ... RailCats Manager Greg Tagert was ejected in the first inning after arguing baserunner interference with third base umpire Reggie Jackson. With the bases loaded, Cody Ehlers hit a double play ball to second, but Jay Pecci's relay throw hit off the arm of a sliding Juan Diaz and trickled into right field. Tagert argued Diaz had his arm intentionally - and illegally - raised to deflect the throw.
