Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG - Not much went right for the Flyers Thursday night at Alexian Field, as Joliet silenced Schaumburg 7-0 to win the three-game set. Joliet closer Jason Richardson made a spot-start for the Hammers and allowed just two hits through five innings, and three Joliet relievers combined to hold the Flyers to their first scoreless outing of the campaign.
Joliet's biggest outburst came in the second when they sent ten hitters to the plate. Andrew Pinckney got the scoring going with a two run blast, scoring Joey Gomes, who had led off the inning with a single. Tim Alberts and K.C. Herren both then singled to make it four consecutive hits off of Flyers starter Steve Shippey to start the inning. Adam Klein singled in Alberts and scored along with Herren when Freddie Thon hit a two-out single to complete the scoring in the second.
Joliet again strung together four consecutive base runners in the fourth inning, with Klein and Kevin Rios knocking back-to-back doubles and Phil Avlas walking in front of another RBI hit from Thon. Joliet would score twice in the inning, bringing the score to 7-0.
Thon finished a game best 3-5 with three RBIs.
The Flyers really only approached the doorstep once. With two down in the fifth, Klein lost a T.J. Wilson fly ball in the lights, Wilson hustled to third and was waved around in search of an inside-the-park home run, but was cut down by several feet at the plate. The only other Flyers hits were a Felix Jose double in the second and a Vince Harrison double in the ninth.
Shippey falls to 0-1 on the season. Richardson moves to 1-4.
The Flyers now hit the road for three in Gary over the weekend and three in Joliet next week. They'll return home for a nine-game set starting Friday, and tickets are still available. Tomorrow's matchup at the Steelyard begins at 7:00, with Carmen Pignatiello throwing for the Flyers.
