Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
night in front of 3,693 spectators.
Starter Stephen Bougher had a tough day at the office on Saturday, allowing ten runs on 14 hits and struck out only three in five innings of work.
The Saltdogs came out swinging, picking up four extra base hits in the first inning, including a two-run homer from Curt Smith, as they put up five runs before the Canaries could even come to the plate.
The Canaries made things interesting in the early innings. Sioux Falls native Patrick Fiala, in his first start at home with the Canaries, drove in two runs with a sharp single to right to cut the deficit to 6-2.
After the Dogs added an extra run in the top of the third, the Birds got right back to it. Ethan Chapman led off with a walk. Darwin Perez then sent a towering fly ball over the wall in right to cut the lead to two at 6-4.
Unfortunately, things went downhill from there for the Birds. The Dogs added four runs in the fourth, one in the sixth, one in the seventh, and one in the ninth to put the game out of reach. On the night, the Saltdogs hit eight extra base hits, including two homers and six doubles. Meanwhile, the Canaries' bats went silent, as they were held in check by the Lincoln pitching staff the reminder of the night.
The Canaries look to rebound and salvage the series on Sunday. Canaries ace Joe Bircher (4-6, 2.45 ERA) will take the mound for the Canaries on Sunday and will face Saltdogs ace Shairon Martis (8-7, 3.48 ERA). Sunday is the final Sunday Family Funday of the 2016 season. It will also be Faith and Family Day at The Birdcage. Local churches will be on hand to celebrate the day. Fans will hear testimonials from Canaires players and coaches along with other faith related activities throughout the game. Kids will also have the chance to run the bases after the game and get autographs and pictures from their favorite Canaries players and coaches. Gates open on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m. Contact the Canaries ticket office for information regarding single game or season ticket options by calling 605-336-6060 or visit the website at www.sfcanaries.com for more information.
