Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA- The Lincoln Saltdogs finally snapped their six-game losing streak Wednesday night, beating Sioux City 6-5 at Lewis and Clark Park. The Saltdogs improved their record to 1-1 in the second half of the 2008 season.
Lincoln starter Jason Jarvis (1-4) earned his first win as a professional, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of work. Unlike his first start last week, the Saltdogs gave him some runs to work with early on. Skip Adams cracked a two-run double in the third inning to score the first runs of the game, and the Dogs added another run in the fifth when Corey Harrington scored on a throwing error.
The Saltdogs appeared to break the game open in the sixth inning against Sioux City starter Dusty Bergman (0-10), who lost to Lincoln for the third time this season. Shea McFeely drove an RBI single to left to push the Dogs' lead to 4-1, setting up Joe Dempsey, who cracked a two-out, two-run double to left and gave Lincoln a 6-1 advantage.
Sioux City, though, would not go quietly. They had scored their first run in the fourth inning, and they responded to Lincoln's three-run top of the sixth with two runs of their own in the bottom half that drove Jarvis from the game. New Lincoln relievers Dan Knox and Benny Cepeda combined to hold the X's scoreless in the seventh and eighth frames, but Saltdogs closer R.D. Spiehs ran into some horrible luck in the ninth. Spiehs struck out the first two batters, but after a walk, Chris Grossman hit a check-swing double that stayed just fair down the right-field line. Juan Camacho followed with a blooper to right that fell between two Lincoln defenders, scoring two and pulling the Explorers within one. Spiehs finally bore down, however, and retired the final batter on a deep flyout to center.
On the night, Dempsey finished 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. McFeely and Delgado also had two hits each for Lincoln, and Harrington scored a pair of runs.
The Saltdogs and Explorers play the finale of their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05. Ryan Dittfurth is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln, while Nick Singleton is expected to start for Sioux City.
