April 14, 2006 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
Mobile took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a Brett Bonvechio solo homer to right-center field.
Mississippi tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Carl Loadenthal drew a leadoff walk. He stole second and reached third when catcher Luany Sanchez overthrew the shortstop. Martin Prado then doubled to right bringing Loadenthal to the plate.
The Braves took a 2-1 lead in the third when Loadenthal led off with a single. He moved to second on Prado's groundout and scored on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's (pictured above) single up the middle.
Braves' starter Chris Waters was cruising along until he got one out in the fifth. He struck out the first batter he faced, then walked the next three consecutively. Waters was replaced by Will Startup who induced a bases loaded groundball, but pinch hitter Kennard Jones beat the relay to first and the BayBears tied the score at two.
Mississippi quickly retook the lead, 3-2, when Saltlamacchia blasted his second homer of the year onto the deck in front of the Cellular South Cafe. The homer marked his first multi-hit game of the year and his first multi-RBI game of the year.
The Braves added to their lead in the sixth when Yunel Escobar led off with a single. He moved to second on a walk and to third on a double play then scored on a wild pitch by Bubba Nelson.
Mississippi added two more in the seventh. Prado walked and moved to second on Matt Esquivel's infield single, and scored on Saltalamacchia's single. Esquivel then scored on Yunel Escobar's infield single making the score 6-2 Mississippi.
Chris Waters (4.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR) was outstanding for Mississippi in his second outing of the year. Will Startup (2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K) threw to scoreless innings to earn his first AA win. Glenn Tucker (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K) held Mobile off the board during his one inning. Manny Acosta (1.0 IP) threw one scoreless inning.
Mobile's Sean Thompson (4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HB) left the game with the score tied at two. Bubba Nelson (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 1 WP) fell to 0-1 on the year.
