Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers (65-70) dropped their series opener against the Salt Lake Bees (69-66), 3-2, on Monday night at Cheney Stadium.

Center fielder Leonys Martin (2x4), third baseman Danny Muno (2x4, R, 2 2B), and Ian Miller (2x4, R, 3B) combined to lead the Rainiers offense.

Salt Lake jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as David Fletcher lined a solo home run off the face of the R Yard in left field. They tacked onto their lead with an RBI double from Sherman Johnson in the fifth and a run-scoring triple from Rey Navarro in the sixth, making the visitors lead 3-0.

The Rainiers earned their first run of the evening in the bottom of the seventh. A double, hit batter, and a walk loaded the bases with one out for right fielder Zach Shank, who lifted a sacrifice fly to right and cut the Bees lead to 3-1.

Miller led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple to right field, and eventually came in to score on a passed ball, slicing Salt Lake's lead to just one run at 3-2.

Tacoma loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but could not capitalize to bring across the tying run, giving the Bees a 3-2 victory.

Rainiers starting pitcher Cody Martin (4.2 IP) allowed two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out six. He took the loss, his second of the season.

Rainiers right-hander Max Povse (1-3, 7.40) and Bees righty Jaime Barria (1-0, 0.00) take the mound as the series continues on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT.
