Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces concluded their three-game series tonight. With both teams gunning for the West Division title on the last night of the regular season it was a playoff-like atmosphere at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

The Salmon Kings and Aces continued where they left off Friday night with the goaltenders being the story through the first period. The Salmon Kings' Billy Thompson and the Aces' Mike Brown held the fort for their respective squads and sent the teams to the locker rooms tied 0-0 after one period.

The Salmon Kings struck first in the second period when Wes Goldie scored an incredible goal. Shorthanded, Goldie stole the puck at the Aces blueline; he spun off the defender for a partial break and lifted the puck up and over Brown for the 1-0 lead. A mere 17 seconds later Matt Shasby came across the Kings' blueline and shot a laser beam past Thompson to tie the affair. Victoria retook the lead when Derek Krestanovich combined with Darryl Lloyd on a give-and-go play. Krestanovich fed Lloyd who immediately sent a touch pass back to Krestanovich who slid the puck five-hole on Brown. The Kings would lead 2-1 after 40 minutes.

The Salmon Kings would take a large step in sewing up their first West Division title when Darryl Lloyd beat Brown for a 3-1 advantage. Needing a regulation win Aces' coach Keith McCambridge pulled Brown with five minutes remaining, but the Kings would salt away the victory when Matt Kelly fed Brady Leavold who fired it in the empty net. Salmon Kings 4 Aces 1.

The Salmon Kings went 0/4=0% on the power play while the Aces were 1/7=14.3%. Alaska out shot Victoria 41-31.

The Salmon Kings now begin their journey towards the Kelly Cup. The Kings will face Bakersfield Condors in the National Conference Quarterfinal that begins on Thursday, April 10th at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
