Salmon Kings take out Thunder in OT

Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Salmon Kings and the Thunder met for the third time in four nights on Saturday at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria. The Kings had taken the first two games and looked to sweep the three game set.

Both teams had chances in the first period, but it was the goaltenders that were the main attraction as both Victoria's Billy Thompson and Stockton's Glenn Fisher made big saves. The two teams went to the locker rooms knotted in a scoreless tie at the end of one period.

The second period started out very similar as the first with both teams throwing shots at the net and the goaltenders knocking them away. Until the Thunder were able to capitalize on an odd man rush Rohlfs fired a shot that Thompson was able to handle, but the rebound was shot home by a spinning Brandon Schwartz to give Stockton a 1-0 lead. A hardworking shift by the line of Wes Goldie, Kiel McLeod and Jordan Krestanovich resulted in the Kings first goal as Krestanovich was able to knock a loose puck by Fisher to tie the game at 1-1. That is what the score remained after 40 minutes.

The third period solved nothing as the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. In overtime Kings' rookie defenseman Dylan Yeo picked off the puck and went hard to the net. Showing patience he held onto the puck, forcing Thunder goalie Fisher to go down. Yeo then circled the net and slid in the wrap around for the overtime winning goal.

The King's have now won five straight games and collected seven in a row on home ice. Victoria and Stockton were both 0/3 on the power play. Stockton outshot Victoria 42-29.

The Salmon Kings now head on the road for three games against the Kelly Cup Champion Idaho Steelheads. They return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on November 28th when the Phoenix Roadrunners come to town for three games in three nights. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
