Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that forward Wes Goldie has been named CCM TACKS ECHL Player of the Month for December.
This the first time the London, ON native has received this award, and also marks the first time a Salmon Kings' player has been so honoured.
Goldie had a league-leading 14 goals, including three game winners, in December. He closed the month with a six-game point streak (11g-2a) and had 17 points total as the Salmon Kings went 10-2-0 and moved into first place in the National Conference. He was selected as a starter for the ECHL All-Star Game.
The 6-1, 200lb Goldie scored three goals, including the game winner, in back-to-back games, a 4-2 win against Alaska on Dec. 17 and a 6-2 win against Phoenix on Dec. 19. Goldie leads the league with 29 goals and is trying to become only the second player in history to lead the ECHL in goals in back-to-back seasons. He led the league in 2007-08 with 42 goals after finishing second with 41 goals in 2006-07. Andrew Williamson of Toledo led the ECHL with 63 goals in 1999-2000 and 52 goals in 2000-01. Wes Goldie and his brother, Ash Goldie, made history last season when they became the first set of teammates and the first set of brothers to lead the ECHL in goal scoring after finishing with 42 goals and 40 goals, respectively.
The 29-year-old ranks second in the league with 10 power-play goals while his 18 power-play points tie him for third and his 40 points rank sixth.
The Salmon Kings welcome the Pacific Division leading Ontario Reign to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre this weekend for a two-game set. The first game goes on Friday night and the second on Saturday evening. Both games start at 7:05 p.m.
