Salem Red Sox News Release
SALEM, Va. - The Salem Red Sox finished an abbreviated homestand with a win Sunday, 3-2 over the Winston-Salem Dash at LewisGale Field.
Winston-Salem (7-11) scored an unearned run against Travis Lakins in the first inning, and for the fourth-straight game plated a run in the game's opening frame.
The Red Sox (11-7) responded against Thad Lowry in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own. Yoan Moncada was chased home from second by a Deiner Lopez single to tie the score at one. Andrew Benintendi scored on a wild pitch, and Nick Longhi scored on a Mike Meyers sacrifice fly. With hits in the first inning, Moncada and Benintendi extended their hitting streaks to 14 games each.
The starters settled down after their turbulent starts, as the game stayed deadlocked at 3-1 until the eighth inning. Lakins (2-1) lasted 5.2 innings, allowing just the one unearned run to score on five hits, walking two and striking out a career-high nine batters.
Lowry (0-2) also lasted 5.2 innings, yielding the three runs on five hits, walking two and striking out two.
Jamie Callahan threw 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Salem, and Taylor Grover surrendered a run in the eighth as the Dash cut the score to 3-2. Grover would strike out two in the ninth to seal the victory and earn his first save of the season.
The win snaps a three-game losing skid for the Red Sox, who maintain their seat atop the Carolina League Southern Division.
The Red Sox are off Monday before hitting the road to begin a six-game road trip against the Frederick Keys Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm. The Red Sox will send Jalen Beeks (2-0, 0.57) to the mound, the Keys will counter with Matthew Grimes (1-1, 1.29). Follow along with all the action on the Salem Red Sox Baseball Network.
