Salem RidgeYaks News Release
The Salem Red Sox look for their first sweep on the road since the first weekend of the year tonight in Lynchburg.
Offensive Power Surge: After averaging just 2.5 runs/game in the previous five game losing streak, Salem's bats have erupted for 22 runs and 28 hits in the first two games against Lynchburg. The 22 runs is the most Salem has scored in a two game stretch since May 8th and 9th against Carolina, when the Sox scored 23 over those two days (18 of the 23 runs came in one game). 28 hits is the most over a two game stretch all season.
Huge Days: Nearly every Salem Sox was involved in last night's 12-3 rout, but Mario Martinez, Kevin Heller, and Jordan Weems had espe- cially big days. Weems went 4-5, with an RBI and a run scored, his third game of three hits or more with the Salem Sox. Weems is hit- ting .355 through 19 games in the Carolina League. The average is even more impressive considering Weems has never hit over .210 in his professional career to this point. Mario Martinez was 4-4 and reached base in all five plate appearances. Martinez scored a sea- son high three runs, and picked up his second four hit game of the season. Heller drove in four runs for the second time this year.
Season Check, Through 100: Last night marked Salem's 100 game of the season, putting the Sox at 47-53 through its first 100 contests of 2014. During last year's Mills Cup championship season, Salem was 49-51 through its first 100 games, on July 21st. Salem held a .258 team average and 4.27 team ERA in those first 100 games. This sea- son, Salem holds a .255 team batting average and 4.21 staff ERA after 100 contests. The Sox are four games out of first place in the second half standings this year. Through 100 games last year, Salem was still three games out of first place.
Notable Nuggets: Over the last 26 games dating back to June 25th, Salem starters have allowed three earned runs or less in 24 of 26 starts. Furthermore, Sox starters have surrendered two earned runs or less in 20 of their last 26 starts. The Sox are 13-13 over those 26.
The Salem Sox are just 7-21 against Potomac and Frederick this sea- son, while they are 40-32 against the rest of the Carolina League. In the second half of the season, Salem is 2-13 against the Keys and P- Nats, and 12-5 against its other five league opponents.
Salem's 15 hits last night tied a season high for the Sox, achieved four previous times. The Sox also had 15 hits on April 8th against Winston-Salem, May 8th against Carolina, June 1st at Potomac and July 8th against Frederick.
Last night's win was Salem's seventh road win in the month of July. That equals the total road wins for the Sox in May and June com- bined. Salem was just 2-11 on the road in June and is 7-3 away from LewisGale Field in July. Conversely, the Sox were 10-3 at home in June and are only 1-9 at home in July.
Salem has now won five of six against Lynchburg dating back to June 12th. The Sox have outscored the Cats 43-15 in those six games.
