Lynchburg, VA - After posting 28 hits over the first two game of the series, the Salem Red Sox managed only five hits Thursday night in the Lynchburg Hillcats 5-0 victory. Jarrett Miller was outstanding for Lynchburg, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He finished with just four hits allowed, striking out six in seven and two thirds scoreless innings of work. Miller did walk three and hit a batter. Simon Mercedes took the loss for the Sox, allowing all five runs on seven hits in five innings. Mercedes struck out six and walked just one, giving him 12 strikeouts and only two walks in two starts since his return to the rotation from the DL.

The Hillcats used a big third inning to pace their victory. Mercedes walked Blake Brown to begin the frame, then surrendered a single to Levi Hyams to put two runners on with no one out. Daniel Carroll doubled in Brown to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. After a groundout by Garcia, the Hillcats blew it open. Consecutive RBI hits by Jose Martinez, Justin Bloxum, and Will Skinner brought home three runs and gave the Hillcats a 4-0 lead after four.

Lynchburg's fifth run came in the fifth, on a solo home run by Jose Martinez off Mercedes.

William Cuevas was outstanding in piggyback duty for the Sox, striking out seven in three innings of scoreless, hitless relief.

Salem's only real chance to get into the game came in the eighth. Back to back one out hits by Carlos Asuaje and Mike Miller put a Sox runner on second for the first time all night. Jarrett Miller got Reed Gragnani to pop out, and reliever David Peterson struck out Jantzen Witte to end the threat. The Sox put a runner on second in the ninth on a Matt Gedman double, but Peterson struck out the side to seal the victory. The Sox had a runner on base in every inning from the third on, but did not tally a run.

Salem returns to LewisGale Field tomorrow night to open a six game home stand with Myrtle Beach and Carolina. First pitch between the Sox and Pelicans is scheduled for 7:05. Cody Kukuk is scheduled to start for the Sox.
