Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Yamaico Navarro's leadoff home run in the top of the eighth inning propelled Salem to a 5-4 victory over Lynchburg in the finale of a two-game series at City Stadium Wednesday night. The Hillcats will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on the Winston-Salem Dash on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. After Lynchburg starter Bryan Morris retired the first two Salem batters, Mike Jones reached on an error by Matt Hague. With Jones at second base due to the error, Navarro delivered an RBI single to give Salem a 1-0 advantage.

The Hillcats answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Chase d'Arnaud doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Jordy Mercer's one-out RBI single.

Neither team scored again until the top of the fourth inning when Salem capitalized on a pair of Lynchburg errors. Navarro reached on a bunt single to start the frame and advanced to second base when Jose De Los Santos could not come up with a grounder off the bat of Anthony Rizzo. After Morris retired Luis Exposito, Chih-Hsien Chiang connected for an RBI single that plated Navarro.

Rizzo and Chiang advanced on a double steal later in the inning and both runners scored when Che-Hsuan Lin hit a fly ball that glanced off the glove of Lynchburg right fielder Jamie Romak and put Salem in front 4-1.

Romak belted a solo home run off Salem starter Seth Garrison in the bottom of the fourth to reduce the deficit to 4-2.

The Cats drew even with a pair of runs in the seventh. Romak hit a one-out single and scored on Alex Presley's RBI triple. Jared Keel knocked in Presley with single to tie the score at 4-4. Keel was picked off by Exposito - one of five Lynchburg runners that were caught stealing or picked off by Salem - for the final out of the inning.

After Navarro's eighth inning home run off Mike Colla gave the Red Sox a 5-4 edge, Lynchburg threatened in the bottom of the eighth. d'Arnaud notched his third hit of the night with a leadoff single off Salem reliever Kyle Fernandes and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by De Los Santos. Mercer followed with a single to put Cats on the corners with one out.

But Fernandes struck out Hague and retired Kris Watts on a fly out to preserve the Red Sox win. Garrison (4-7) earned the win for Salem while Colla (4-1) took the loss for Lynchburg. Derrick Loop picked up his ninth save by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Lynchburg will face the Winston-Salem Dash at Wake Forest Ballpark at 7 p.m. Thursday.
