GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats took the field for the first time in the 2010 exhibition season Monday, falling 11-0 to the American Association's St. Paul Saints at U. S. Steel Yard.

The Saints scored off three different relievers, getting two in the fourth, five runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to build their lead. St. Paul catcher Gerard Haran hit a pair of home runs, a two-run blast in the fourth and a three-run shot in the sixth, both clearing the First Midwest Bank Catwalk in left.

RailCats ace Willie Glen got the start Monday, his first appearance on the U. S. Steel Yard mound since recording the final out of the 2007 Northern League Championship Series in 2007. Glen danced in and out of trouble in his three innings, but induced a pair of double play balls to keep the Saints off the board. Rookie Steve Teno allowed Haran's longball in the fourth - but nothing more - and Aaron Cook worked a scoreless fifth.

Rookies J.J. Potrikus and Andy Paulun each struggled a bit in their debuts, combining to allow nine runs in 1.2 innings. Former RailCats Al-Star Kai Tuomi came on to finish the seventh, however, and worked the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run.

Offensively, the ‘Cats did not muster much against four St. Paul pitchers. Valparaiso University's Zach Rodeghero singled in the fourth, Mike Reese lined a base hit to right in the sixth and Adam Klein doubled off the warning track in the eighth to account for all of the RailCats hits Monday. Jason Godin pitched the first four innings to earn the win for St. Paul.

The game was the first of the exhibition season for the RailCats, while the more seasoned Saints were playing their fourth spring contest and sit just three days from their regular season opener, Thursday, May 13 back in St. Paul. Monday's game was the first at U. S. Steel Yard between the two teams since the ‘Cats clinched their 2005 Northern League Semifinal series in the decisive fifth game five years ago.

The RailCats exhibition schedule continues Tuesday at 11 a.m. with a special exhibition Kids Day against these same Saints. The game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.

The ‘Cats open the 2010 regular season Thursday, May 20 at 7 p.m. against the Kansas City T-Bones. The first 1,500 fans will get great commemorative coins, courtesy Salvi, Schostok and Pritchard, P.C. and the Post-Tribune.
