Saints Start Critical Weekend with 4-1 Win at Chicago

BENSENVILLE, Illinois-The Dubuque Fighting Saints started an important weekend of hockey with a solid performance in the Windy City on Friday. Dubuque topped Chicago 4-1 at the Edge Ice Arena thanks to goals to a pair of goals from Max McHugh. Dubuque, who are in the midst of three games in three nights, pulled within one point of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for 2 nd Place in the USHL's Eastern Conference with the win Friday.

With over thirty friends and family members in attendance, Barrington, Illinois native Brett Boeing gave his cheering section reason to yell early in the contest. After Dubuque's Dylan Gambrell swept a fantastic opportunity by Chicago's Robby Jackson off the goal line, seconds later, the Fighting Saints charged up ice with a chance of their own. Dubuque worked the puck back to defenseman Jordan Klimek at the left point. He fired a wrist shot towards Chicago goaltender Cale Morris. Boeing was parked in front of the goal and tipped the shot over the goaltender's head to make it 1-0 at 2:23. The goal was Boeing's 10th of the season and came on Dubuque's first shot of the game.

In the second period, Dubuque's McHugh scored an impressive goal to make it 2-0 Fighting Saints. Klimek moved the puck up ice to McHugh who drive into the offensive zone on the left wing. McHugh cut around defender Peter Tischke and cut in on net. He made a backhand to forehand move, chipping the puck over Morris' blocker to double Dubuque's lead at 5:10 of the second period.

Chicago would score its lone goal in the third period on a powerplay strike from John Ernsting. With Kevin Reich taking an interference penalty, the Steel were able to beat the Dubuque goaltender. John Schilling worked the puck in front from the corner. It hit Reich's stick and bounced to Ernsting who beat the Dubuque goaltender along the ice to make it 2-1 at 11:47.

Dubuque would respond with a powerplay goal of their own at 14:58. Jarrid Privitera moved the puck to a wide-open McHugh at left point. McHugh took a stride towards the net and snapped a shot over Morris' glove to make it 3-1. The goal was McHugh's second of the game and 19th of the season.

Dubuque added one last tally to capture the win. Alexx Privitera scored on a breakaway out of the penalty box at 17:56 to make it 4-1 Dubuque. After his penalty expired, the puck bounced right to Privitera. He used his fresh legs to beat the Chicago defenders up ice, and maneuvered around Morris for his 10th goal of the season.

With the victory, the Fighting Saints move to 31-18-4 on the season and currently sit at 66 points. With Cedar Rapids losing to Omaha Friday, Dubuque trails the RoughRiders by just one point for 2nd Place in the Eastern Conference with two fewer games played. Dubuque and Cedar Rapids play tomorrow night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.

Reich picked up the win in goal, kicking aside 41 shots to earn his 10thvictory of the season. Dubuque outshot Chicago 43-42 on the evening.

Dubuque is back home tomorrow and Sunday. Tomorrow night the Fighting Saints host the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in a Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup matchup. It's a 7:05 p.m. puck drop!
