Peterson was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Royals organization in June of 2007. During that season he set a Pioneer League record by striking out 11 consecutive batters on August 21 vs. the Billings Mustangs.

The 23-year-old Schmidt lives in Oakdale and was a 41st round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs in the 2009 June Amateur Draft. He appeared in two games at the Rookie Level with the Arizona Cubs and allowed two hits while walking one and striking out three in 2.0 innings of work.

While at Concordia University - St. Paul Schmidt was named the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year. He set the single game, season and career strikeout mark for Concordia while posting a 7-2 record. He struck out a career high 16 in a seven inning contest at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. In his following start he struck out 14, which set the single season mark of 103, breaking his own record of 100 from the previous season, and the school's career mark at 273.

The Saints have signed 15 players during the offseason, eight pitchers and seven position players. Clubs may carry a maximum of 27 players into spring training and must have the roster pared down to 23 for the first 14 days of the season. After those 14 days the roster must be down to 22 players.
