San Angelo Saints News Release
San Angelo, TXâThe San Angelo Saints of the Central Hockey League today announced the signing of defensemen Gavin Hodgson and Matt Mikulic to contract for the 2004-05 season.
Gavin Hodgson returns to San Angelo after making a late entry to the Saints 2003-04 lineup. In 24 regular season and 5 post-season appearances, he notched 4 assists and 26 penalty minutes. He started last season with the Rockford Ice Hogs of the United Hockey League where he recorded 1 assist and 52 penalty minutes in 33 games. No stranger to San Angelo, Hodgson wore the Saints' black and gold during the 2000-01 season where he put up his career highs for points (6) and penalty minutes (96).
As an older player on the roster, Head Coach/Assistant GM Ray Edwards will look to Hodgson to bring size and leadership to the Saints defensive unit.
"Gavin is a physical player and always leads by example," said Edwards. "He knows that he has to play physical and with an edge to be successful. His experience will be an asset to this team."
His experience will prove beneficial to younger players on the team, including rookie defenseman Matt Mikulik.
Mikulik joins the Saints after play with the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL. In 24 regular season games, the 6'2" 210-pound defenseman scored one goal and seven assists while serving 55 penalty minutes. In 21 post-season appearances with the BCHL Championship team, Mikulik contributed one goal, two assists and 14 penalty minutes. Mikulik is no stranger to post-season play. In back-to-back seasons, he as been part of the race for the national championship title.
"Matt is making the jump from junior hockey to professional hockey," Edwards said. "He is going to be raw, but I'm looking for him to learn quickly and make an impact early. He has everything to fit into our plan in San Angelo."
In related news, the Saints acquired the rights to right wing Justin Van Parys from the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in exchange for future considerations. Van Parys made an impression on Saints Head Coach Ray Edwards during his time in the Valley. "I like the way Justin played. Hopefully I can get in touch with him and work something out," said Edwards.
