Scorpions Lock Up Two Defensive Pillars
August 5, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
ALBUQUERQUE â The New Mexico Scorpions of the Central Hockey League retained two important defensive aspects of last year's team today, announcing that defenseman Vladimir Hartinger (HART-inn-juhr) and goalie Miguel Beaudry (BO-dree) have been signed for the 2004-05 season. Hartinger posted a career-high 35 points (12g-23a) last season from the blueline, while Beaudry tied a Scorpions single-season record with three shutouts en route to being named CHL Goalie of the Week three times.
The Scorpions' top-scoring blueliner last season, Hartinger, 25, was a CHL All-Star in 2003 as a member of the Wichita Thunder. The 6-foot, 200-pound native of Sternberk, Czech Republic is entering his sixth professional season and fourth in the CHL. Hartinger was tied for third on the Scorpions with four game-winning goals. His bone-jarring hits have become well-known throughout the league.
Beaudry, 22, made an immediate impact as a rookie, posting a 15-17-2 record in 38 games but posting team bests in goals against average (2.93) and save percentage (.912). He became the first goalie in Scorpions history to post back-to-back shutouts with a 6-0 victory over Fort Worth on March 5 and a 4-0 whitewash of Oklahoma City the next night. Following the Scorpions season, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound native of Verner, Ontario was recalled to the Utah Grizzlies of the American Hockey League where he spent two weeks but did not appear in any games.
"Vladdy and Miguel were two important pieces of our team down the stretch last season," stated Scorpions Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald, "so I felt it was very important to get them back with us for the new year. Vladdy is a ferocious hitter who is more than capable of jumping into the play offensively, and I think everybody knows what Miguel brings to us. He played very well for us last season and I expect him to continue that trend this year."
"I'm excited to be returning to New Mexico for another season," said Beaudry from his home in Ontario. "I had a great experience last year as a rookie and really hope to build upon that to help take the Scorpions back to the playoffs. I know Coach McDonald and Doug Frank are working hard on putting together a great team. It should be a lot of fun."
Hartinger and Beaudry join defenseman Daniel Tetrault along with forwards Peter Ambroziak and Randy Murphy under contract with the Scorpions for the upcoming season.
Season tickets for the 2004-2005 CHL season start as low as $320, and are on sale NOW. The Scorpions open their ninth season of pro hockey at Tingley Coliseum on Oct. 29 when they host the Corpus Christi Rayz at 7:05 p.m. Single-game tickets are expected to go on sale in early October.
