St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The new name of the St. Paul Saints' 2006 mascot certainly has a baseball connection to it. Bud Squealig was officially introduced today as part of the team's Largest Game of Catch in downtown St. Paul. The pig will serve as the team's official mascot for their first season in the American Association.

The name was chosen out of entries in a contest sponsored in part by Rake magazine. Bud succeeds Ham Solo, the 2005 mascot. "Ham ate himself out of a job," said Derek Sharrer, Saints' Vice President/General Manager. "It happens to the best of them. I'm looking forward to seeing young Bud do his stuff this season. Based on what I seen in spring training, he looks like a real up-and-comer."

Bud, who lives on a farm in Hudson, WI when he is not busy working Saints' games, will handle many duties for the team, including bringing water and baseballs to the umpires during home games. His predecessors' duties have ranged from leading a motorcycle pack into Midway Stadium for a pre-game ceremony to serving as a ringbearer at a wedding.

Like the players, Bud practiced his trade at three preseason home games to prepare for the Midway Stadium regular season home opener on Monday, May 15 against St. Joseph at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES - Saints manager George Tsamis named Mike Meyer his Opening Night starter for Friday's game at Sioux City. The righthander has won eight games in each of his two previous seasons with the team. It is his 38th career start, second on the all-time team list to Jake Whitney. Righty Justin Lord, who pitched at Class A Lynchburg (Carolina League) and Hickory (South Atlantic) will go Saturday with southpaw Anthony Boughner, who won 11 games for Schaumburg (Northern) the past two seasons working the Sunday finale against the Explorers. ... Under American Association rules, teams are allowed to keep 24 players on their active roster for the first two weeks of the season. As a result, there were no player cuts for the first time in team history. ... The Saints went 3-1-1 in preseason play, posting a collective team ERA of 1.57. ...
