Saints Continue to Roll, Trounce Canaries 10-4

ST. PAUL, MN (July 21, 2014) - As well as the St. Paul Saints have played this season one team they couldn't seem to figure out was the one with the second worst record in the American Association, the Sioux Falls Canaries. They entered play just 3-7 against the Canaries, but on Monday night at Midway Stadium they snapped a five game losing streak against their division foes with a 10-4 victory at Midway Stadium in front of 4,020 and recorded their sixth four-game winning streak of the season.

With the Saints trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first Devin Thaut walked and with two outs Henry Wrigley lined a shot over the left field wall, his 13th of the season, to tie the game at two.

In the third the Saints took a 3-2 lead when Jared McDonald singled, stole second and advanced to third on the throwing error by the catcher. Two batters later Wrigley produced again with an RBI single. He finished the night 3-4 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored.

With the Saints trailing 4-3 in the sixth the offense came through again. Wrigley led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Angelo Songco. After Evan Bigley was hit by a pitch to load the bases Keith Brachold walked to force in a run and tie the game at four. That was the end of the night for Canaries starter Kyle Vazquez. With one out Dwight Childs gave the Saints a 5-4 lead with a sacrifice line out to left.

In the seventh the Saints put the game away. McDonald led off with a walk and scored on a double by Willie Cabrera to give the Saints a 6-4 lead. After Wrigley was hit by a pitch Songco hit a mammoth three-run homer to right-center, his 10th of the season, to give the Saints a 9-4 lead.

That was enough for Saints reliever Drew Gay who entered the game in the top of the sixth with the Saints trailing by a run. He, however, was dominant in 3.1 innings of work not allowing a hit until two outs in the ninth. That was the only hit he gave up while striking out one and running his record to 4-0.

Devin Thaut extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the ninth and he would later come around to score.

The same two teams meet in game two of the four game series on Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (4-5, 6.36) to the mound against Canaries LHP Joe Bircher (3-6, 3.98). It is SeigoPalooza along with the toilet paper drive presented by Innovative Office Solutions. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
