Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
ST PAUL, MN - The Canaries (22-41) were unable to continue their previous success against the St. Paul Saints (36-26), falling 10-4 Monday night at Midway Stadium. The Canaries were 7-3 in the first 10 games between the teams this season. This week marks the final time the Birds will play at Midway before the Saints move into a new ballpark next season.
AJ Kirby-Jones got the Birds on the board first with a two-run blast in the top of the 1st, bringing home Brandon Jones who singled. After Henry Wrigley tied the game with a two-run homer of his own in the bottom half of the inning, the Canaries would have two opportunities to retake the lead. Neither was successful as they left two runners on base to end each of the 2nd and 3rd innings. Instead it was the Saints who would cash in when Wrigley hit an RBI single into center to give the Saints a 3-2 lead in the 3rd.
The Canaries came through for two runs in the 5th to retake the lead. After Kevin Dultz doubled and Jones drew a walk, Kirby-Jones singled in his third run of the day to tie the game and Carlos Mendez gave the Birds a 4-3 lead with a base hit. That spelled the end of the day for Saints starter Jeff Shields who took a no-decision and went 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits, struck out two and walked four.
From there, the Saints took full control, scoring seven unanswered runs to take the game 10-4. In the 6th, Kyle Vazquez walked Keith Brachold with the bases loaded to tie the game at 4. Vazquez was then relieved by Chase Boruff who surrendered a sacrifice fly to Dwight Childs to hand the Saints a 5-4 lead. Angelo Songco later added a three-run homer and St. Paul cruised to the victory.
Vazquez finished with 5+ IP, allowing 5 runs, 4 earned, on six hits while striking out two and walking three. He dropped to 4-5 with the loss. Drew Gay improved to 4-0 by tossing the final 3.1 innings and not allowing a run.
Kirby-Jones finished his day with three hits and three RBI for the Birds and Brandon Jones added two hits. Songco and Wrigley each drove in three runs to lead St. Paul.
Game two of the series will be at 7:05 PM Tuesday night. Pregame coverage will start at 6:45 on AM 1230 and FM 98.1 KWSN.
