Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN - Edouard St-Laurent recorded the lone goal in the shootout as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs, 4-3, Friday at Harbour Station.
The loss spoiled the Sea Dogs' comeback from a 3-0 deficit.
Jordan Martel scored twice for Baie-Comeau (10-9-0-1) while Gabriel Fortier added a goal and two assists.
Daniel Hardie had a goal and an assist for Saint John (4-12-4-2) whlie Nick Deakin-Poot and Robbie Burt also found the net.
Prior to the game, the Sea Dogs honoured Equipment Manager David "DK" Kelly, who worked his 800th QMJHL regular season game on Thursday.
The Drakkar opened the scoring 91 seconds into the second period when Martel carried the puck down the right wing on a 2-on-1 and ripped a wrist shot past the blocker of Alex D'Orio in the Sea Dogs' goal.
Martel struck again on the power play four minutes later, with a one-timer from the left faceoff dot that got past D'Orio's glove.
Eighteen seconds after that, Fortier buried the rebound of a point shot from Bradley Lalonde to make it a 3-0 game.
But Saint John cut into its deficit moments later.
Deakin-Poot took a pass near the right side of the Baie-Comeau blueline and whipped a quick wrist shot past a surprised Blanchette for his first QMJHL goal.
Burt made it a one-goal game less than two minutes later.
Overager Cole Reginato took a feed on the left boards in his own zone and saw Burt open at the Baie-Comeau blueline. The Ontario product raced in alone and deked to his forehand, tucking the puck between Blanchette's legs.
Hardie netted the only goal of the third period, a power play marker nearly seven minutes in.
Radim Salda took a shot from the left circle that was stopped. Hardie found the rebound near the left side of the crease and forced it past Blanchette to tie the game at 3-3.
St-Laurent was the first shooter in the shootout, and the only one to score.
The second-year forward used a deke to his backhand to beat D'Orio on his blocker side.
Blanchette earned the win with 49 saves and three more in the penalty shot contest. D'Orio made 29 saves in the loss, along with two more in the shootout.
Burt's goal made him first star while Martel's two goals prompted a second-star selection. Hardie was named third star in front of 3,626 fans in attendance.
