(Saginaw MI) The Saginaw Spirit defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 7-1 in Game 5 at the Dow Event Center Friday night. The win cuts the Hounds series lead to 3-2. Spirit defenseman Andrew Hotham, center Tom Pyatt and center Jack Combs each tallied two goals in the game. "The game was on the line and the players stepped up and brought their A-game," stated Hotham.
Saginaw started the first period strong with center Jack Combs finding the back of the net at the 3:20 mark to give the Spirit an early 1-0 lead. Assisting on the goal were center Tom Pyatt (NYR 05) and defenseman T.J. Brodie. Spirit defenseman Andrew Hotham added a power play goal on a point shot at the 7:52 in the first. Center Cody Bass (OTT 05) and winger Ryan McDonough assisted on the goal. Hotham added another power play goal at the 17:31 mark of the first to move the score to 3-0, assisted by wingers Patrick Asselin and Chris Chappell. The Spirit ended the fist period with a 4-0 lead against the Greyhounds thanks to a late power play goal from Pyatt, scored at the 19:00 mark. Saginaw's Hotham and Combs assisted.
The Spirit carried their momentum into the next two periods. Defenseman Nigel Williams (COL 06) scored an unassisted power play goal at the 16:16 mark in the second, taking the score to 5-0. Pyatt tallied his second goal of the evening at 13:56 in the third, assisted by defenseman Mitch Maunu. Defenseman Nick Crawford also tallied an assist. The Hounds broke through Spirit netminder Marc-André Perron's shut out with a goal in the final minutes, scored by winger Brandon MacLean.
