Sadly the Scorps Drop Their First Game Back
July 5, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release
It was a Fourth of July jabfest at Desert Sun Stadium but a pair of streaks ended seven lead changes and four hours later Wednesday.
The visiting St. George RoadRunners came from behind with a three-run ninth to take their first win since Father's Day and sent the Scorpions to their first home loss of the season in a 12-10 marathon.
The Scorpions gave the announced crowd of 3162 something to cheer for in the bottom of the first inning as Rich Janeway and Henry Calderon took Matt Pena deep twice in three pitches for a 2-0 lead.
St. George pulled within two off Scorpions lefty Charles Merricks in the third as Steven Wright's sacrifice fly scored Brooks Shankle from third.
The Scorpions plated another run in the third without the benefit of a hit to restore the two-run lead but Merricks pitched himself into a corner in the fifth. After hitting leadoff batter Geoff Wagner in the helmet and allowing a double to Dustin Hicks, Merricks gave up back to back RBI singles to Shankle and No. 9 batter Geron Sands.
Wright put the RoadRunners ahead with an RBI double to left field and Marcos Villezcas capped the six-run no-out rally with a two-run base knock to center.
Merricks caught Brett Flowers looking to record the first out of the frame and St. George stranded Villezcas on second when Santiago Guerro and Ryan Stevenson popped out.
Maikel Jova launched his first home run of the season to straight away center as fireworks danced beyond the right field fence in the bottom of the inning. The three-run blast off Pena evened the game at six and took Merricks off the hook.
Merricks took a no decision after allowing six earned runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking a pair of walks.
Amad Stephens entered with two outs in the eighth and was charged with a blown save after Sands sent the 1-1 pitch sailing over the left field fence for a two-run home run. He was in line for the win before Matt Saucedo allowed a pair of runs to cross on ninth inning singles.
The Scorpions loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but Wright made a diving catch in right field to retire Janeway for the game's final out.
Notes: The Scorpions debuted their newly constructed air conditioned luxury box Wednesday. A spokeswoman said the team has not yet decided how tickets for the glass-enclosed seats will be distributed.
