Orange County Flyers News Release
The Orange County Flyers continued their struggles as their losing streak reached 8 games in a wild and bizarre affair against the Long Beach Armada Thursday night in a game that featured a little bit of everything...
Perhaps still a little weary from their collapse the night before, the Flyers got down to a 5-run deficit early, battled back to take the lead, and then exchanged leads before again sucumbing to defeat at the hands of the rival Armada 12-9 on Fireworks and $1 Beverage night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
Before a large and lively crowd, the Flyers and Armada battled it out in a see-saw affair that featured plenty of sloppy defense which included 7 total errors, questionable umpiring where both Flyers manager Garry Templeton and Flyers mascot Coal Train got thrown out, a Grand Slam, an attempted steal home, an abundance of runs scored, and a fireworks show to cap it off.
The Armada jumped all over Flyers starting pitcher LHP Jamie Douglas (2-1) early as lead-off hitter CF John Kaplan singled up the middle and after RF Chris Klemm reached on disputed dropped fly ball by Flyers RF Aaron Davis, Armada 3B Jeff Larue hit a 1-2 pitch over Davis' head in right field for a bases-clearing double and 2-0 Armada lead after the 1st inning.
Kaplan, who went 3-4 with 2 runs scored in the game, kicked started another 2-run inning in the 2nd inning by beating out a grounder to Flyers SS Bret Levier with 1 out in the inning. After another error by the Flyers, LaRue struck again as he hit a rocket off the left field scoreboard for his 6th homer of the season to give the Armada a 4-0 lead. Larue killed the Flyers going 3-5 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.
After the Armada went up 5-0 in the 3rd off of Armada 2B Daisuke Ikenaga's sacrifice fly, the Flyers responded by getting 2 runs to close the Armada lead to 5-2 on a CF Garry Templeton RBI triple and a 2B David Bacani sacrifice fly to right.
In the 4th Armada LF Dan Trumble added to the Armada lead with a Ruthian 2-run balst over the Goodwin Field scoreboard in left field to chase Douglas from the game and give the Armada a seemingly comfortable 7-2 lead.
Flyers Bacani made it 7-3 in the 4th on a 2-out bloop single that continued his hit-streak to 15 games. DH Rich Pohle continued the comeback in the 5th when he hit the 1st pitch over the right field fence for a lead-off solo home run, his 4th of the year. Then, with the bases loaded and no outs, LF Mark Okano hit a towering Grand Slam that was just fair over the left field wall. It was his 3rd of the year and gave the Flyers a 8-7 lead after 5 innings.
After see-sawing leads in the 6th, the Armada's Trumble finished off the Flyers for good with a single that scored LaRue and DH Chris Wakeland. Trumble went 3-4 with 4 RBI and 4 runs scored to sink the Flyers and continue their losing streak.
