SAN JOSE, Calif. (Jan. 10, 2006) - Legendary Arena Football League performer BARRY WAGNER has agreed to a one-year contract with the San Jose SaberCats that will allow him to play his 15th season in the 20-year-old league in 2006.
The upcoming season will also mark the seventh in a SaberCats uniform for Wagner, who holds AFL career records for total points, touchdowns scored, rushing touchdowns, receptions and receiving yards.
The two-time AFL Most Valuable Player and six-time Ironman of the Year is also closing in on the league record for career all-purpose yards. Wagner is one of just three players to amass over 20,000 career all-purpose yards and needs just 165 to surpass former Arizona Rattler Hunkie Cooper for the all-time lead.
"First of all I thank God for giving me the opportunity to be around this long and to see this league grow. But records are meant to be broken," he said of the impending mark.
Wagner, who had his league record streak of 144 consecutive regular and post season games played snapped last season after sustaining a foot injury, comes to training camp healthy and ready to win.
"I didn't like the way I missed last year," he said about the injury that shelved him in Week 7. "I had the opportunity to have a good season but I got hurt. I'm pretty healthy right now and I feel great."
Wagner has played in six ArenaBowl championship games during his career and won titles in 2002 and 2004 with San Jose and in 1998 with Orlando.
The club also announced the signing of former Fresno State University offensive lineman FITU TU'UA and placed recently signed WR/DB KEVIN ARBET on Refused to Report.
Tu'ua (6-6, 350) was a three-year member of the Bulldogs' program and earned second team All-Western Athletic Conference honors in 2001 after playing in all 14 games with 11 starts.
An updated training camp roster with player bios is available on the SaberCats official website www.sanjosesabercats.com.
The SaberCats open their 12th season in the Arena Football League on Saturday, January 28 when they host the expansion Utah Blaze. Season and group tickets for the 2006 season are available by contacting a sales representative at (408) 573-5577. Individual game tickets range in price from $15 to $50 and can be purchased through any Northern California Ticketmaster outlet, online at ticketmaster.com or at the HP Pavilion box office.
