San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2003) â The San Jose SaberCats have brought back a big piece of their 2002 championship team by signing free agent WR/DB Omarr Smith to a two-year contract today, General Manager Terry Malley made the announcement.
The SaberCats bring back a key member of their title team in Smith, who was named Ironman in San Jose's 54-14 win over Arizona in ArenaBowl XVI. Smith, who played his first three Arena Football League seasons with San Jose (2000-02), signed with Tampa Bay for the 2003 campaign and captured another title last year with the Storm.
Smith became one of just four players in the history of the Arena Football League to win consecutive titles with two different teams.
"He makes our team better" said head coach Darren Arbet, who has led the SaberCats to four straight Western Division titles. "We wanted Omarr back here in San Jose and we were able to make it happen."
A two-way player while with the SaberCats, Smith was moved to defensive specialist last season and excelled. He started all 16 games totaling season career-highs with 88.5 tackles, eight interceptions and 18 pass breakups. Smith tallied 17 tackles and two interceptions in three postseason games.
A key member of Tampa Bay's highly ranked defensive unit last season, Smith was in contention for postseason honors, placing second to San Jose's Clevan Thomas in the voting for the league's ADT Defensive Player of the Year.
The former San Jose State University star ranks fifth on the SaberCats career list for total tackles (102.5) and unassisted tackles (89), and sixth in interceptions (6), pass breakups (17) and passes defended (23).
The SaberCats open their 10th season in the Arena Football League in February. Season and group tickets for the 2004 season are available by contacting a sales representative at (408) 573-5577. Individual game tickets are set to go on sale in mid December and can be purchased through any Northern California TicketMaster outlet or the HP Pavilion box office.
