San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Jan. 30, 2006) - The San Jose SaberCats received some much-needed good news following their season-opening loss to the Utah Blaze on Saturday night.

WR/LB James Roe, who was carted off the field on a stretcher early in the first quarter after catching a touchdown pass, was discharged from San Jose's O'Connor hospital early Sunday morning diagnosed with a mild concussion. He is, however, out of the SaberCats lineup indefinitely.

Roe was injured on the SaberCats first offensive play of the game when he slammed his head into the metal railing that separates the stands from the playing field. Roe held onto the ball but fell to the turf in the corner of the endzone.

According to San Jose's head athletic trainer Steve Bartlinski, Roe will be evaluated later this week by a specialist.

Also, prior to Saturday's game, the SaberCats placed six-time Ironman of the Year award winner Barry Wagner on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. The AFL's career scoring leader sustained the injury just days before the opener.

Wagner will be eligible to return to the lineup in time for San Jose's game at Arizona on February 12. Last year against Arizona Wagner scored the 50th rushing touchdown of his San Jose career.

The SaberCats begin the longest road trip in franchise history when they play the first of five road games on Monday, February 6 at Las Vegas. The game against the Gladiators will kick off at 7:30 p.m. (PT) and can be heard on San Jose's flagship radio station KNBR 1050. The contest will also be shown live in the Bay Area on KBWB (WB20).
