SaberCats re-sign Dan Loney

SAN JOSE, Calif. (April 27, 2006) - Veteran lineman DAN LONEY, who has been the San Jose SaberCats starting center for the past two seasons, has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Arena Football League team, the club announced.

Loney (6-1, 284) has been an anchor at center on the line for five seasons and emerged as the team's starter in 2005 helping quarterback Mark Grieb set an AFL record for passing yards in a season.

"The organization is very excited about re-signing Dan Loney to a multi-year contract," offensive line coach Dave Witthun said. "He is one of the top centers in the league and is the anchor of our line. His leadership on and off the field is a big asset to our team and we are very happy to have Dan back for the next two seasons."

The Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) product originally joined the SaberCats in 2001 spending the majority of the season on the practice squad. He played in four games the following season before becoming a mainstay on the team's roster in 2003.

Loney played in all 16 regular season games and three playoff contests during San Jose's 2004 ArenaBowl championship season then became the team's starting center in 2005.

During his five-year AFL career, Loney has played in 57 regular season games for the SaberCats, including 10 starts this year.

The SaberCats look for their 5th straight win they travel to Los Angeles to face the Avengers on Saturday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. from STAPLES Center. The team returns home for the final two games of the 2006 season starting on Saturday, May 6 when they face the defending ArenaBowl champion Colorado Crush.
