San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 8, 2006) - While the San Jose SaberCats have been busy this offseason dipping into the free agent player market, the team today announced the hiring of former arenafootball2 head coach JEFF JARNIGAN to the post of Defensive Line Coach/Special Teams Coordinator for the 2007 season.
"Jeff is a tremendous coach and complements our staff very well," stated SaberCats' head coach Darren Arbet. "It will be nice to hand over the reigns of our special teams to a proven coach with experience in this game."
Jarnigan, who spent the last two seasons as head coach of the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, brings more than 17 years of coaching experience to the team and is well aware of the illustrious history of the SaberCats organization.
"I'm excited to have the opportunity to get in with one of the best organizations in the AFL," Jarnigan said. "I've been in Austin (Wranglers) so I was very familiar with San Jose and the success they've had so I am looking forward to coaching with this team."
In his two seasons with the Yard Dawgz Jarnigan compiled a 21-11 record and two playoff appearances. The team finished in a tie for first place in the Midwest Division in 2006 with an 11-5 record.
Jarnigan's AFL experience comes from a one-year stint as defensive coordinator with the Austin Wranglers in 2004. His defense held opponents to fewer than 40 points in a game five times and ranked in the top three of two of two defensive statistical categories. The effort led the Wranglers to an 8-8 record in their inaugural season.
Prior to joining the Wranglers, Jarnigan was the defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach for the af2's Tulsa Talons for three seasons (2001-03) where his team won the ArenaCup in 2003. During his stay the Talons also compiled a winning percentage of .814 in addition to capturing two National Conference Championships.
A premier franchise in the AFL, San Jose has captured two ArenaBowl titles, six Western Division championships, seven consecutive playoff appearances and owns the league's best regular season record this decade. Season tickets for the SaberCats 13th season in the AFL, which begins next February, are available now by calling (408) 573-5577 or by visiting the team's official website - www.sanjosesabercats.com.
