Frisco RoughRiders News Release

FRISCO, TEXAS - Frisco RoughRiders outfielder Ryan Cordell has been named Texas League Player of the Week for the week of April 18-24. The 24-year-old hit .429 and hit two home runs, leading Double-A baseball with nine RBI during the week.

Cordell, 24, is off to a scorching hot start to begin the 2016 season with the RoughRiders. During the week, Cordell went 9-for-21 (.429) with four extra-base hits, including a grand slam in six games. He led the Texas League in RBI (9), slugging (.810), and OPS (1.244). Cordell's grand slam came less than a week after his first, when he blasted a ball into the left field berm at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, putting Frisco ahead 5-0 in the first inning this past Thursday.

For the season, the former Liberty University star is batting .368, second in the Texas League, with league-best totals in RBI (18), hits (21), extra-base hits (11), doubles (7), runs (14), slugging (.702), and total bases (40).

Cordell was drafted by the Rangers in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft.

Cordell is the first RoughRider player to earn a weekly award this season. The RoughRiders had six players win honors last year: 3B Joey Gallo (May 18-24), LHP Frank Lopez (May 18-24), OF Nomar Mazara (June 8-14), IF Drew Robinson (June 22-28), OF Nick Williams (July 20-26), and LHP Chad Bell (Aug. 24-30).

The RoughRiders are back in action on Monday night against the San Antonio Missions at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
