Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Odessa, Texas - Odessa Jackalopes center Mike Rutter scored two goals, including the game-winning powerplay tally at the 14:52 mark of the third period, to lead the host Jackalopes to a 3-2 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas in Saturday night CHL action at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, Texas.
Rutter's efforts helped the Jacks overcome a 2-0 first period deficit. Fort Worth jumped out to an early lead in the game's opening twenty minutes when forwards Bobby Davis and Jimmy Sokol lit the lamp for the Brahmas.
Odessa, however, had no intentions of allowing Fort Worth to cruise to the road win. Rutter scored his first goal of the game early on in the second period to cut the Brahmas lead to 2-1. Jackalopes left wing Sebastien Thinel tied the game at two 43 seconds into the third period, setting the stage for Rutter's decisive score. With Odessa on the powerplay thanks to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Brahmas' David Silverstone, the fourth-year pro from Cornell University netted a man-advantage tally to put the Jacks on top 3-2.
The Jackalopes would make Rutter's second goal of the contest stand up as the game-winner thanks to inspired penalty killing. Fort Worth had a two-man advantage for the final 1:23 of regulation, but the Brahmas could not tie the score. For the game, Fort Worth was 0 for 8 on the powerplay, extending their streak of consecutive powerplay chances without a goal to 34 straight.
Odessa netminder Mike Gorman turned away 33 of the 35 Fort Worth shots he faced in the game to earn the win. Fort Worth's rookie goaltender Andrew Martin again played well in defeat, making 46 saves on the 49 Jackalopes shots sent his way.
The loss was the tenth regulation defeat by one-goal for the Brahmas this season (tied with Corpus Christi for the most in the CHL). Fort Worth now has a record of 17-36-8 on the season, while the Southwest Division champion Jackalopes have a mark of 34-20-6 for the year. The Brahmas will close out their 2005-2006 CHL season next week with three games on the road, playing at Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown, Ohio on Wednesday, March 22 and on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25.
