Saskatchewan Rush News Release
Saskatoon, SK - The Saskatchewan Rush in partnership with TD and the Saskatoon Tribal Council introduced a new pre-game tradition of presenting a star blanket to the opposing team on Co-op Field prior to each home game this season.
To open our tradition on game one at SaskTel Centre, Saskatoon Tribal Chief, Marc Arcand, and Saskatchewan Rush general manager Derek Keenan, welcomed Colorado Mammoth head coach Pat Coyle to centre field where he was wrapped in a star blanket. This is a longstanding tradition in local indigenous culture as a symbol of respect and welcoming.
"I hope in this territory you are treated with respect and honour by indigenous and non- indigenous people," stated Tribal Chief Marc Arcand.
The Star Blanket is used to honour, protect, and celebrate one's achievements. It is placed on an individual, to wrap them in respect. Each blanket is individualized but they all hold the image of a star in the centre. The star represents the Creator's Eye, to show that whenever the creator is with you and covering you, you are safe.
Each Star Blanket was created in a unique manner to represent each team. The design is to showcase personality through their team colours and logo. It is to show the respect and welcoming we give to each person as they join us on Treaty 6 territory.
The Saskatchewan Rush, in collaboration with Chief Arcand, are grateful to share this tradition with our visitors from around the National Lacrosse League.
