Rush trade for a Rock

February 8, 2006 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Edmonton Rush News Release

EDMONTON, AB-The Edmonton Rush traded a 2006 second round draft pick to the 2005 NLL Champions Toronto Rock in exchange for 6'4", 235 lb right-hander, forward Mat Giles. Giles was heading west to play against the Rush this Saturday, February 11 at Rexall Place. However, a change of plans on jersey colours will now see him wearing with pride a black and silver jersey.

"Mat brings offensive and power play experience and size to the lineup." states GM/Head Coach Paul Day. "He will be a positive influence on our younger players and is familiar with several players and coaching staff already. He's a very good team guy."

Giles, 31, has played four games for the Toronto Rock this season for one goal, one assist, nine penalty minutes, seventeen shoots on net and thirteen loose balls. He has several years of experience in the NLL with teams such as the Ottawa Rebel, Montreal Express, Columbus Landsharks, Albany Attack and with the Rochester Knighthawks. He was acquired by the Rock as a free agent in 2005. Giles won an Ontario Major Lacrosse series title with the Peterborough Lakers in 2005. In 2004, he won a Mann Cup with the Peterborough Lakers and played with the Rochester Knighthawks finishing seventh in scoring with 23 points (10 goals and 13 assists). Mat's season ended in Toronto when the Rock defeated them in the league semi-final.

The Rush also today placed Kyle McEwen on the injury reserve list. McEwen broke his foot during training. McEwen, who has not played a game yet, will be assessed in three weeks.

The Edmonton Rush will re-battle the 2006 NLL Champions Toronto Rock this Saturday, February 11 at Rexall Place. The official ball drop is 8:30 p.m. The Rush vs. Rock battle in Toronto late in January this season gave the Rock their first win of the season. The re-battle at Rexall is the last time the two teams will face each other this season.

George Canyon, Canadian Country Music Award winner, Fan-voted Cheez Whiz Fans' Choice Award, Single of the Year, Male Artist of the Year and SOCAN Song of the Year will perform at half time. Also, one of Canada's brightest new country stars, Lisa Hewitt will perform the anthem.

The fans attending the Rush game Saturday night will definitely have a winning experience. One lucky fan in attendance will win a RV trailer, courtesy of Western RV Country, approximate retail value: $20,000 (WAVE 25ft travel trailer by THOR California) and the Ultimate Rush Fan Contest continues sponsored by City TV. One crazy Rush fan will be chosen from the audience to win a road trip with the Rush for the Calgary game February 17 (includes bus, hotel, tickets).
