Rush Toppled 8-3 by Thunder
December 2, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rapid City Rush News Release
(Wichita, KS) - On Wednesday night, the Rapid City Rush and Wichita Thunder met for the first time this season. The Rush entered the game with a 10-game winning streak against their conference foe, but the Thunder proved it was a new season with a convincing 8-3 victory on home ice.
The theme of the opening period was bad bounces as the Thunder came away with a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Andrew Martens opened the scoring at the 8:40 mark when a centered puck deflected off of a Rush defenseman and through the five-hole of Danny Battochio. The Rush answered back less than a minute later when Scott Wray bounced home his 8th goal of the season, making it a 1-1 game. Just over fifteen minutes into the game, the Thunder converted on their first powerplay of the game when Kory Scoran's pass from the point ricocheted off of a Rush skate and home. The goal gave the Thunder a 2-1 lead and marked the first of seven straight goals for the home team.
Matt Robinson and Robin Richards extended the Thunder lead with even strength goals at 6:18 and 9:15 of the second period. Andrew Martens rounded out the second period scoring with his second of the game and Wichita's second powerplay goal of the game at 17:21. After 40 minutes, the Thunder held a commanding 5-1 lead.
Wichita would continue the offensive attack in the third period, beginning with a pair of goals just 21 seconds apart. The first came at the 9:18 mark from Troy Schwab before Matt Robinson picked up his second of the evening. Three minutes later, Aaron Davis scored his sixth of the season, giving the Thunder their 8th goal of the game, marking a season-high.
The Rush finally stopped the bleeding with a pair of late goals from Les Reaney and Vladimir Hartinger, bringing the game to an 8-3 final.
The Rush now head home for a pair of games against the Quad City Mallards, the first meetings between the two teams. Tickets are still available for both games.
