Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rush got back on track on Wednesday night with a 4-1 conquest over the Arizona Sundogs at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Brendan Cook led the way with his second four-point effort of the season, while Danny Battochio made 28 saves for his 21st win of the year. The Sundogs had their league high five-game road win streak and a 13 one-goal game streak snapped with the loss. The win allows the Rush to maintain their three point lead in the Northern Conference and also pushes the "magic number" in order to secure a playoff spot to four.
The Rush got off to a slow start for the second consecutive game as Konrad Reeder buried his team-leading 22nd goal of the season just 3:22 into the game. Reeder sidestepped the Rush defense and then slid the puck five-hole on Battochio for the opening marker. Rapid City would answer over ten minutes later with Brendon Hodge's 20th of the year. Hodge collected the puck and fired a shot from the bottom of the left circle that found its way over the shoulder of Doug Groenestege for the equalizer.
The Rush would take control in the second period, beginning with veteran Rod Aldoff's first goal of the season. A nice play down low by player/assistants Brendan Cook and Scott Wray set up a big rebound that Aldoff sent home for Rapid City's first lead of the game and eventual game-winner. Near the midway point, the Rush would double the lead when a shot from defenseman Riley Weselowski was deflected home by Cook to make it a 3-1 game heading into the third.
The lone goal in the final stanza was collected by Cook on the powerplay, tying him with Wray for the team lead in goals with 25. An outlet pass by Hodge set up a 3-on-1 led by Les Reaney who dropped the puck back to Cook who then fired a laser over the glove of Groenestege to secure the 4-1 win.
The Rush now end the season series with a 5-1-0 record against the Sundogs with tonight's contest serving as the only game not decided by one goal.
Rapid City ended up 1-for-6 on the powerplay while holding Arizona scoreless on six chances, including a full two-minute 5-on-3.
The Rush now take on conference rival, the Colorado Eagles on Saturday at 7:05pm at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. That game is sold out, but tickets for next Tuesday and Wednesday's games against the Wichita Thunder are still available.
