Trenton Devils News Release
Trenton, NJ, March 2, 2010 - The Trenton Devils' winning streak was halted at six games with a 6-4 loss to the Reading Royals in Trenton's only Tuesday home game of the season. The Royals moved past the Wheeling Nailers for eighth place in the conference, and now have a three-point lead over the Devils' 57pts for second place in the East, retaining the advantage in the final playoff push.
A front-loaded opening stanza ended 3-3 as both teams came out firing, Reading earning a 20-19 shot advantage by period's end. Conversely, the second period was far more defensively oriented, remaining scoreless until Royals defenseman Ryan-James Hand scored his first goal of the season on a wrist-shot from the point at 17:34, putting the Royals ahead for good.
The conservative play at both ends would continue through the third, neither team scoring again until Rob Slaney put a wrist shot past Caruso, screened by his own defender, at 14:42. With Dave Caruso pulled for an extra attacker, Matt Vokes answered with a goal in the dying minutes of the game on a low snap shot at 18:32, but Stefano Giliati sealed the Royals win on an empty netter with a minute left for his only goal in a four-point evening.
Dave Caruso stopped 36 shots and notched his first point, originating Trenton's third goal, starting the breakout to Chris Poli who weaved through four Royals before beating Dalton under his right pad on the long side. Matt Dalton made 41 saves in his first game back from a visit to the Boston Bruins.
All ten goals in the game came at even strength as the Devils power play went 0-for-4, including a 30-second five-on-three, while the Royals went 0-for-3 on the night. Reading is now 0-for-18 on the power play in their past three games while Trenton is 0-for-8 in their past two.
Trenton's Brett Wilson, Jeff Prough, Poli and Vokes scored the four Trenton goals in the loss and all players continued point streaks. Wilson now has three goals and three assists in a five game point streak, Prough has a three game goal-scoring streak along with two assists, Poli has six goals and seven assists in a seven game point streak and Vokes has nine goals and eight assists in a nine game point streak.
Royals Rookie Matt Ward, fresh off a career at Division III Neumann College, led the way for Reading with points on each first period tally, including his first goal as a Royal at 13:16. Defenseman Ryan-James Hand and Robert Slaney also registered their first goals of the season in the win.
The Devils (24-24-4-5, 57pts) drop their first game since February 13 against Reading, and next travel to Toledo, Ohio for a game against the Walleye this Friday, March 5 before finishing the weekend with a pair in Wheeling. The Royals (28-24-1-3) will host the Kalamazoo Wings twice in four days starting March 4, with a visit from the Johnstown Chiefs between contests.
