OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals scored seven runs in the third inning en route to an 11-1 rout of the Tacoma Rainiers Monday night in front of 2,642 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Tacoma starter Blake Beavan (1-1), obtained by the Seattle Mariners from Texas a month ago in the deal that sent Cliff Lee to the Rangers, retired the Royals in order in each of the first two innings. But, in the third, Omaha sent eleven batters to the plate and banged out seven hits while accepting two walks. David Lough drilled a two-run triple down the right field line to give the Royals a 3-0 lead. Jai Miller later capped the scoring with a three-run homer.
It was the sixth home run in the first six games of this homestand for Miller, who now has 18 on the year. Miller would add an RBI double in the sixth inning to finish with four RBI on the night. On the homestand, Miller is 11-for-24 (.458) with six home runs, eleven RBI and nine runs scored.
Lough finished with four hits, including his second triple of the contest in the sixth inning to drive in his third run of the game. He is second in the Pacific Coast League with eleven triples and is the first Omaha batter to leg out two triples in one game since Kerry Robinson accomplished the feat in the 2006 season.
Meanwhile, Royals starter Anthony Lerew (6-3) blanked the Rainiers over the first seven innings, before yielding a run in the eighth as Dustin Ackley led off with his third hit of the contest - his second triple in as many games. Ackley scored on a ground out as Tacoma avoided a shutout.
The Rainiers could not avoid losing their sixth in a row. It was the eleventh defeat for Tacoma (61-55) in the past 13 games and it came under the leadership of Jose Castro. Tacoma's hitting coach, who played for Omaha in 1988-89, took over as interim manager after Daren Brown was promoted Monday from Triple-A by the Mariners as their interim manager after Don Wakamatsu was released.
Omaha (63-54) has won three straight, seven of the past eight and ten of its last 13 tilts. The Royals are nine games over .500 for the first time since September 1, 2002 when the club was 76-67.
Game three of the series is Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Rainiers lefty Ryan Feierabend (3-4, 5.05) faces Royals right-hander Federico Castaneda (4-2, 3.86).
It's Valpak 2-Buck 2uesday. General Admission tickets are only 2 bucks! And at Tuesday home games, just bring your KRAFT Singles wrapper to the Rosenblatt ticket office and buy one ticket to get one FREE from KRAFT singles! The night is also presented by CD 105.9, The CW and The Reader.
