Portland Beavers News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Wily Mo Peña went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs and Cory Luebke earned his third win as the Portland Beavers racked up 15 hits and ended the Iowa Cubs' five-game winning streak with a 7-4 win at Principal Park Monday night.
After flying out in the first, Peña belted a two-run homer to center in the third, then hit an RBI single in the fourth and added singles in the sixth and eighth to record his second four-hit game in the last four days. Peña, who is batting .385 with 19 RBIs in 18 games with the Beavers (44-73) since signing as a minor league free agent on July 20, homered twice and drove in four on Friday night in Portland's win at Omaha.
Cedric Hunter had three hits, including two doubles, Mike Baxter continued his scorching August with two hits and Kyle Phillips extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double and a triple. Chris Stewart belted his seventh home run to push his hitting streak to 10 games.
Luebke (3-0) pitched well enough to stay perfect in a Beavers uniform, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. He fanned four.
Former Beaver Bobby Scales hit a solo home run and Micah Hoffpauir and former OSU standout Darwin Barney each had two hits for the first-place Cubs (67-49), who saw their lead in the American Northern division slip to 4 1/2 games after Omaha beat Tacoma, 11-1.
Hung-Wen Chen (2-2) only went four innings and allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks.
Phillips tripled and scored on Nick Green's RBI single in the second and the Beavers added three more runs in the third, anchored by Peña's two-run shot.
Barney plated Iowa's first run of the game in the third but Portland tacked on two in the fourth on RBI singles by Baxter and Peña.
Stewart took reliever Jake Muyco deep in the fifth to give the Beavers a 7-1 advantage.
After the Cubs scored twice in the sixth, Scales' homer in the seventh pulled Iowa within three before the Beavers bullpen settled down.
Adam Russell recorded his seventh save with a scoreless ninth.
The Beavers and Cubs continue their four-game series Tuesday night at 5:05 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: Right-hander Ryan Webb rejoined Portland after being optioned from San Diego Sunday and yielded his first run in 11 appearances with the club on Scales' homer in the seventh ... left-hander Aaron Poreda was placed on Portland's disabled list before the game with a right ankle sprain ... the Beavers got a hit in each of the first eight innings, including at least two in five of them ... it was Portland's 12th game with at least 10 hits since the All-Star break (27 games) ... Phillips has hit safely in 23 of 25 games and Josh Barfield has hit safely in 27 of 31.
