Royals pound Portland in Spring Training

SURPRISE, AZ - The Omaha Royals evened their Spring Training record at 1-1 on Friday, outscoring the Portland Beavers 10-6 at Kansas City's Cactus League complex in Surprise, Arizona.

Royals outfielder Jorge Padilla, batting cleanup for manager Mike Jirschele's club, went 3-for-5 with an RBI double, a run-scoring triple and a two-run homer. In addition to his four RBI, Padilla scored two runs himself.

Omaha first baseman Graham Koonce plated two runs with a pair of extra-base hits, while Royals shortstop Irving Falu had two singles and scored twice.

Jason Cromer was impressive in his start for Omaha, tossing two hitless innings. The 6'-4" lefty, a native and resident of Des Moines who had been pitching in the Tampa Bay organization since being selected by the Devil Rays in the 11th round of the 1999 draft, struck out four batters and walked one.

Omaha hosts the Tacoma Rainiers, Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, on Saturday afternoon in Surprise.

The Royals open their 2007 Pacific Coast League season on Thursday, April 5th at Albuquerque, with the home opener at Rosenblatt Stadium slated for Friday, April 13th at 7:05 p.m., also vs. the Isotopes.
