Memphis Redbirds News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis earned their second straight win of the spring with a 2-1 victory over the Las Vegas 51's, the affiliate for the Los Angeles Dodgers, in Jupiter, FL Friday afternoon.
The Redbirds started slow, recording just two hits in the first four innings. However, Reid Gorecki got things going with a leadoff single in the fifth inning, one of two hits for Gorecki in the game. After a single by Amaury Marti and a walk by Ryan Christianson, Mike McCoy put the 'Birds on top with a two-run single, giving Memphis the 2-1 lead. McCoy finished the game going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Travis Hanson continued his hot spring with a single in the sixth.
A one run lead was more than enough for Redbirds pitchers, who kept Las Vegas guessing and gave up just seven hits in the game. Right-hander Mike Smith started for the 'Birds, going a solid three innings while striking out three and allowing two hits. Stuart Pomeranz relieved Smith, allowing one run on two hits over two innings. Right-handers Justin Garza, Jose Garcia and Chris Russ finished the game, pitching four innings of one-hit ball.
The 'Birds will stay in Jupiter tomorrow to host the Albuquerque Isotopes (Florida Marlins).
