Royals mastery of Sky Sox continues
April 29, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA â If their first meeting of 2004 is any indication, the Omaha Royals will again fare very well against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox this season. The Royals knocked off their Pacific Coast League Central Division rivals 8-3 before 3,329 fans on a chilly Thursday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. Omaha improved to 65-31 against Colorado Springs since joining the PCL in 1998, which is the club's best record against any PCL opponent.
The Royals jumped out to a big lead early, scoring two runs in the second and five more in the third off Sox starter Travis Driskill (1-2), who entered the game with a 1.74 ERA. Driskill had not walked a batter in his first 12-and-a-third innings this season, before the Omaha native walked Adrian Brown, Jarrod Patterson and Calvin Pickering to begin the bottom of the third inning. By the time the dust settled, the Royals had batted around and scored five runs to turn a 2-1 lead into a 7-1 advantage.
On the night, Omaha left fielder Byron Gettis went 3-for-3 with two RBI and scored two runs. Alberto Castillo had three hits, including an RBI double and Alexis Gomez knocked in a pair of runs and scored once.
Royals starter Brad Voyles (2-1) got the win, allowing three runs (two earned) in five-and-two-thirds innings. Voyles tied a season high with seven strikeouts. Ryan Bukvich added three K's in an inning-and-a-third of scoreless relief and Jaime Cerda finished with two shutout stanzas.
Omaha (9-12) snapped a three-game losing streak at home, while Colorado Springs (10-9) lost for just the fifth time in 13 road tilts.
Game 2 of the series is Friday at 7:05 p.m.: RH Denny Stark (0-1, 31.50) vs. RH Kris Wilson (2-1, 5.48) is the pitching match up, with post-game fireworks on tap. The pre-game show is on the air at 6:45 p.m. on Fox Sports Radio 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
