Jorge Toca signed as free agent

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that first baseman/outfielder Jorge Toca has been signed as a free agent. Toca should be available to play in Thursday night's game against the Portland Beavers. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 23 players; 11 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders and three outfielders, plus one player (infielder Henry Mateo) on the disabled list.

Toca, 29, was released in Spring Training by the Pittsburgh Pirates and began the season with the Aguascalientes Rieleros of the Mexican League, where he batted .339 (19-for-56) with five RBI in 16 games. The native of Villa Clara, Cuba spent most of the 2003 season with Triple-A Norfolk, batting .274 (116-for-424) with seven home runs and 52 RBI in 115 games with the New York Mets top farm club. Toca was traded to the Pirates on August 22 and was assigned to Triple-A Nashville where he batted .294 (10-for-34) with two home runs and 10 RBI in 10 games. He began his minor league career in the Mets farm system after being signed as a non-drafted free agent on September 7, 1998. Toca was signed by Isao O'Jimi and current Montreal Expos General Manager Omar Minaya. He was a premier player on the Cuban National Team in 1994 and 1995, a squad that included Livan Hernandez, Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez and Rolando Arrojo. Toca played in 25 games with the Mets from 1999 through 2001, batting .259 (7-for-27) with five RBI in 25 games. He began the 2004 season with a career .279 (553-for-1979) minor league batting average, 58 home runs and 294 RBI in 537 games.

The next Trapper home game will be on Thursday, April 29 when the club will take on the Portland Beavers. The game will begin at 7:05 PM.
